This study aims to find the upland rice varieties that tolerant to drought by analysis of root and shoot growth. Research designed by randomized block design with two factor. The first factor is 4 levels of drought and the second factor is 7 varieties of upland rice. The results showed that the level of drought had significanly decrease plant height, weight of dry shoot, the amount of chlorophyll, growth rate and photosynthesis rate, but increased dry root weight. The varieties respond differently to the level of drought on the dry root weight. The relatively tolerant varieties are varieties Situpatenggang, Situpagendit, local Sumatera Utara and varieties Batugegi.
