Abstract

This study examines one of the novels by John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. The research title is "The Negative Impact Of Mortgage Systems on Farmers in John Steinbeck's The Grapes Of Wrath: Lessons for Farmers in Tanah Karo, Raya, Tiga Runggu, and Saribudolok." (Negative Impact of Collateral System on Farmers in John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath: Lessons for Farmers in Tanah Karo, Raya, Tiga Runggu, and Saribudolok). This research uses mimetic theory which sees literary works as a picture/reflection of reality. Researchers will use a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques in the literature and the field. Data were taken from the novel The Grapes of Wrath and from informants (farmers) in the areas of Tanah Karo, Raya, Tiga Runggu, and Saribu dolok. This study explains and describes that The Grapes of Wrath can be an acautionary tale for Indonesian farmers, especially in Tanah Karo, Raya, Tiga Runggu, and Saribudolok to avoid poverty, loss, or division as in the novel.
