Abstract

Religious moderation is one of the efforts launched by the government in order to manage religious diversity in Indonesia. The interesting thing in its development is that religious moderation is recognized as a 'living document'. This living document opens a space for this religious moderation to be adapted and translated in the diverse Indonesian context with various points of view that can enrich the meaning of religious moderation itself.

On the other hand, John Wesley's understanding of "heart religion" is interesting to consider. Even though at his time, John Wesley did not deal directly with the context of religious moderation, his thoughts can be a valuable contribution in the context of religious moderation in Indonesia. This paper highlights relevant aspects of John Wesley's thought for the contemporary Indonesian context, especially with regard to religious diversity and religious moderation proclaimed by the government.
