Abstrak

Background: Diarrhea is the abnormal condition of defecation or watery stools that occur more frequently
than usual. According to the data from Ministry of Health in Republic of Indonesia, there are 60 million
patients suffer from diarrhea and 70-80% of them are children. The purpose of this study is to determine the
characteristics of diarrhea in children aged 6 to 12 years old in the Dr. Pringadi Hospital Medan period
January 2012 to June 2014.
Method: This research is a retrospective descriptive study conducted at the Medical Records Section
Regional of the Dr. Pringadi General Hospital in the period of January 2012 until June 2014. A total of 58
samples were selected with a total sampling technique. From each sample, the data was taken from the 6 to 12
years old from the period of January 2012 to June 2014, gender, length of treatment, chief complaint,
complaint accompanying, nutritional status, and laboratory test.
Results: From the 58 samples analyzed, diarrhea patients of the 6 to 12 years old in the period of 2012 were
the most with 24 patients (41.38%), 37 male patients (63.79%), and 21 female patients (36.21%). The less
than or equal to 14 days were 55 persons (94.8%) with the main complaint was diarrhea with 27 patients
(44.8%) and complaint along the way was asthma with 46 patients (79.3%). It was obtained that the highest
nutritional condition was underweight as much as 36 patients (62.1%), most laboratory tests of routine blood
were as many as 48 patients (84.5%).
Conclusion: Based on this study, it can be concluded that the patients with diarrhea from the age of 6 to 12
years old in the period of January 2012 to June 2014 occurred most in 2012, more common in men as many
as 37 people, the longest treatment was less than or equal to 14 days, the chief complaint was diarrhea with
the most complaint accompanying was asthma, the most nutritional condition was underweight and the most
laboratory tests were routine blood.
