Abstract

Background: Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases in Indonesia. The prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia is 25.8%. Someone who suffers from hypertension who has even had it for years is often not aware of it until complications occur such as severe damage to vital organs that can lead to death. Hypertension is a condition in which a person experiences an increase in blood pressure above normal, which is above 140/90 mmHg, usually an increase in systolic and diastolic pressure. Hypertension is a trigger for various diseases, including stroke, diabetes, and kidney failure. The organ associated with this disease is the heart. One of the factors of hypertension is high cholesterol levels or hypercholesterolemia. With high levels of cholesterol in the blood, there will be an increase in blood pressure. This results in higher systemic vascular resistance and leads to a more severe increase in blood pressure.

Methods: This study is a study using the literature study method or literature review. Data obtained from secondary data using documentation techniques. Data documentation is carried out based on journals related to research variables.

Conclusion: Based on the analysis of several research articles, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between total cholesterol levels and blood pressure in hypertensive patients over the age of 40 years.
