Abstract

Type 2 diabetes acts like a never-ending puzzle, messing with sugar levels and how our brains work. The Mediterranean diet is like a superhero cape, known for maybe helping our brains stay sharp because it fights swelling and rust. Yet, we're still unsure if it does the trick for Indonesians grappling with type 2 diabetes. Objective: This study aimed to figure out if eating like folks in the Mediterranean impacts the thinking skills of type 2 diabetes patients at Dr. Pirngadi General Hospital in Medan. Methods : The study was like watching and checking, using a snapshot approach. Scientists picked 153 type 2 diabetes patients meeting set rules using a step-by-step pick method. They checked how well patients stuck to the Mediterranean diet, then used a brainpower test to measure thinking skills. The info gathered got assessed using special tests. Results: Most folks in the study, around 80.4%, weren't fans of the Mediterranean diet. Brainpower went down in over half (51.2%) who skipped this eating plan. But, a whopping 86.7% who loved the Mediterranean diet showed normal brain skills. Sticking to this diet and thinking skills seemed linked (p = 0.002). Getting older (60 plus) and having diabetes longer (8+ years) also upped the odds of brain decline. Conclusion: The Mediterranean diet seriously affects the thinking skills of type 2 diabetes patients. So, embracing this diet could be like a shield against losing brainpower.
