Abstract

This study was motivated by increasing concerns over the incidence of ovarian cancer, one of the deadliest cancers in women that is often diagnosed at a late stage due to non-specific symptoms. Several risk factors such as age, age at menarche, parity, and family history are known to influence the occurrence of this cancer. Furthermore, lifestyle changes in society, such as decreasing age at menarche, increasing age at first marriage, and declining birth rates, may contribute to the rising trend of ovarian cancer cases in the future. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between age, age at menarche, parity, and family history with the incidence of ovarian cancer at Vina Estetika Hospital Medan in 2024. This research employed a correlational quantitative design using secondary data from patient medical records. A total of 124 records were analyzed, consisting of 55 ovarian cancer patients and 69 non-cancer patients. The chi-square test results showed a significant relationship between age and family history with the incidence of ovarian cancer (p=0.045 and p=0.000, respectively), while no significant relationship was found for age at menarche and parity. The association between family history and ovarian cancer was strong, whereas the association with age was weak. These findings highlight the importance of genetic factors and certain age groups in early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer, and they may serve as a basis for formulating more targeted public health policies in the future.
