Background: Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative disease in the elderly, caused by the breakdown of cartilage
in the joints. This damage leads to the formation of osteophytes, which cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in the
joints, limiting movement and reducing the sufferer's quality of life. Joint pain makes it difficult for the elderly to
perform physical activities, while lack of activity can also worsen the condition. Excessively strenuous or repetitive
physical activity also risks exacerbating pain. Therefore, a balanced physical activity is essential for maintaining
joint health and reducing osteoarthritis symptoms in the elderly.
Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between pain levels and physical activity levels in elderly
people suffering from osteoarthritis.
Method: This correlational analytic study used a cross-sectional approach and used a questionnaire as the data
collection instrument. The sample consisted of 23 respondents obtained using a purposive sampling technique.
Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, followed by the Spearman correlation test to evaluate
the relationship between pain levels and physical activity.
Results: Spearman correlation test analysis obtained results of a significant negative correlation between pain
intensity and physical activity levels in the elderly with osteoarthritis (r = -0.637; p = 0.001).
Conclusion: A significant negative relationship was found between pain levels and physical activity in elderly
people with osteoarthritis at the KHU Orthopedics & Traumatology Clinic, which showed that the higher the level
of pain felt, the lower the level of physical activity performed.
