Background : Hypertension is the biggest health problem in the world because of its high prevalence rate and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. According to data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in 2013, 25.8% of people in Indonesia aged over 18 years experienced hypertension and this increased to 34.1% in 2018. Smoking is a factor that influences the development of hypertension. Apart from smoking, BMI is a factor that contributes to the development of hypertension.
Objective : To determine the relationship between smoking and body mass index on hypertension at the Sei Semayang Community Health Center, Deli Serdang Regency.
Method: The research carried out was analytical research using an observational approach with a cross-sectional design, using the Spearman test to assess the relationship between variables. The sample for this study used the Slovin formula, namely 56 hypertension patients at the Sei Semayang Community Health Center, Deli Serdang Regency in July 2024.
Results : The results of the study using the Spearman test, showed that there was a relationship between smoking and hypertension in respondents at the Sei Semayang Health Center in July 2024 (p = 0.031 (p < 0.05)) and there was a relationship between Body Mass Index and respondents' hypertension at the Sei Semayang Health Center in July 2024. 2024 ( p = 0.001 (P<0.05)).
Conclusion : There is a relationship between smoking and hypertension at the Sei Semayang Health Center and there is a relationship between Body Mass Index and hypertension at the Sei Semayang Health Center in July 2024 among respondents.
