Abstract

Background: Acute exacerbation of COPD is a patient's condition that deteriorates continuously beyond the normal daily variation. The prevalence of COPD morbidity and mortality has been increasing year by year. Symptoms of COPD exacerbations are characterized by coughing, excess sputum production, and shortness of breath. Disruption of gas exchange that causes hypoxemia and can be accompanied by hypercapnia is a crucial feature of COPD and is likely to underlie many of its pathophysiological consequences. One of the treatment efforts to prevent or improve hypoxemia and maintain tissue oxygenation so that it remains adequate is by providing oxygen therapy. Oxygen therapy in COPD patients with the right concentration of oxygen can reduce shortness of breath during activity, can improve mobility and can improve quality of life. During severe exacerbations, arterial blood gases should be monitored for pH, PaO2 and PaCO2 pressures.

Research Objectives: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of oxygen therapy on changes in Partial Pressure of Oxygen (PaO2) and Partial Pressure of Carbon dioxide (PaCO2) in patients with acute exacerbations of COPD.

Research Method: This type of research is an analyticalresearch using a retrospective design that uses pre-test and post-test designs.

Research Results: The total number of research samples is 78 samples.  The analysis used Wilcoxon test at α < 0.05. The results showed that there was an effect of oxygen therapy on partial pressure of oxygen and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (p value < 0.001).

Conclusion: In this study, the method of administering oxygen therapy can increase the average partial pressure of oxygen after the administration of oxygen therapy and can decrease the average partial pressure of carbon dioxide after the administration of oxygen therapy and there is an effect of oxygen therapy on the partial pressure of oxygen and partial pressure of carbon dioxide in patients with COPD acute exacerbation at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital in 2023.
