Abstract

Background: One of the main causes of death and suffering in children worldwide, especially in developing countries, is diarrhea. Diarrhea is a condition of defecating more often than usual or more than three times a day accompanied by softer or more liquid feces with or without mucus and blood. Data from the 2022 Indonesian Health Profile states that diarrhea is the cause of death in post-neonatal (28 days-11 months) by 6.6%. The high number of diarrhea sufferers is inseparable from the lack of awareness and knowledge of mothers about how to prevent diarrhea. One effort to prevent diarrhea in infants can be done by providing exclusive breastfeeding at least until the baby is 6 months old.

Objective: To determine the relationship between the level of maternal knowledge and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding with the incidence of diarrhea in infants aged 0-6 months.

Method: The type of research used is an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design to determine the relationship between the level of maternal knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding on the incidence of diarrhea in infants aged 0-6 months.

Results: Based on maternal knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding on the incidence of diarrhea in infants aged 0-6 months, the results of the study showed a p value = 0.001. Based on the provision of exclusive breastfeeding on the incidence of diarrhea in infants aged 0-6 months, the results of the study showed a p value = 0.009.

Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the level of maternal knowledge and the provision of exclusive breastfeeding with the incidence of diarrhea in infants aged 0-6 months (p value <0.05).
