Background: Based on data from the 2020 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey, the infant mortality rate was 16.85 deaths per 1,000 live births. One of the main contributors to the decline in infant and toddler mortality rates is reducing the incidence of low birth weight (LBW), where based on data from the Indonesian health profile in 2022, the incidence of neonatal deaths with LBW reached 5,155 cases, followed by deaths due to asphyxia, which were 4,625 cases. LBW babies are at higher risk of experiencing physical and mental disorders, even death. The condition of LBW babies is caused by various factors, including mothers who experience malnutrition, anemia, multiple pregnancies, pregnancies at risk ages, and short intervals between pregnancies. This study aims to examine the relationship between pregnancy spacing and anemia with the incidence of LBW.
Research method: The type of research used in this study is analytical research with a cross-sectional design. The data taken is secondary data from the medical records of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan City.
Results: Based on statistical tests, a p-value of 0.042 was obtained in the relationship between pregnancy spacing and the incidence of LBW at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan, and a p-value of 0.014 in the relationship between anemia and the incidence of LBW at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between pregnancy spacing and anemia with the incidence of LBW at Dr. Pirngadi Hospital, Medan.
