Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis is still one of the biggest health problems in the world, Indonesia ranks second after India followed by China. Almost a quarter of the population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, around 89% of tuberculosis cases occur in adults and 11% in children aged 0 to 14 years. A history of contact with tuberculosis sufferers is the most common risk factor for tuberculosis in children. However, there are several studies that have found that a history of contact is not a risk factor for tuberculosis in children. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between contact with tuberculosis sufferers and the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in children who were outpatients at the Medan Lung Hospital in 2022. Research Methods: This type of research uses the Chi-Square test with a cross-sectional approach only for a moment or to see the relationship between contact with tuberculosis sufferers and the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in children who were outpatients at the Medan Lung Hospital in 2022 during the study with a sample of 90 respondents based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: From the results of this study, the most respondents were obtained based on household contacts of 67 respondents (74.4%) and based on tuberculosis of 68 respondents (75.6%) and in the bivariate results there was a relationship between contact with tuberculosis sufferers and the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in children with p-value <0.05; Chi-Square count 34,057> Chi-Square table 0.05 (dk 1) 3.841; RP 3.03; 95% CI 1.6053 - 5.5744). Conclusion: The results of the study showed a significant relationship between contact with tuberculosis sufferers and the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in children who were outpatients at the Medan Lung Hospital in 2022.
