Abstract

Background: Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by an Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The body contains immune cells called lymphocytes; when their numbers decrease, an infection is often present. D-dimer is a byproduct of fibrinolysis produced by the fibrinolytic system.D-dimer concentrations may exceed normal values when the body is inflamed.

Research Objectives: to ascertain if levels of lymphocytes and D-dimer are associated to the severity of COVID-19.

Research Method:  The type of research used is a cross-sectional design with employed observational analytical metrics.

Research Results: The findings of the study employing 291 samples showed a substantial correlation between the severity of verified COVID-19 patients and a low proportion of lymphocyte cells, with p-values of 0.000, and a significant correlation between that severity and a high D-dimer, with p-values of 0.000.

Conclusion: Due to this study, it was found that there was a correlation between lymphocyte levels and the degree of severity in patients with confirmed COVID-19, specifically a decrease in the percentage of lymphocytes with increasing severity of patients with confirmed COVID-19 and a correlation between the severity of patients with confirmed COVID-19 and the D-dimer value, i.e., the more serious the verified COVID-19 patient, the higher the D-dimer value.
