Abstract

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is one of the most common cancers, approximately 60% of cases of head and neck cancer, followed by several other cancers, namely thyroid cancer, laryngeal cancer, hypopharynx, oropharynx, mouth, salivary glands, and the fourth highest incidence after cervical cancer, mammary and lung. Salted fish can cause nasopharyngeal cancer because it contains nitrosamines which are carcinogenic substances. Nitrosamines can trigger EBV viruses that express one of the proteins, especially LMP1.

Research Objectives: To find out that there is a relationship between the habit of consuming salted fish and the occurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma at Vina Estetica Public Hospital in 2022 - 2023.

Research Methods: The type of research conducted is observational analytic measurement, with a cross-sectional design, the researcher observes or measures variables at certain times

Results: In the analysis there was a relationship between a history of consumption of salted fish >10 years and the incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma with a p value of

0.002 and there was a relationship between the routine consumption of salted fish > 3 times a month and the incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma with a p value of 0.000

Conclusion: There is a relationship between the habit of consuming salted fish and the occurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
