Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common comorbidities in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, the increasing population of DM sufferers indicates that there are health problems that require special attention. Diabetic patients who have high HbA1c levels are at risk of complications. Therefore, HbA1c can be used to predict the severity of COVID-19. Due to coagulation events, COVID-19 patients often have elevated D-Dimer levels.

Objective: Determine the relationship between HbA1c and D-dimer levels on the length of treatment of COVID-19 patients suffering from type 2 DM at Bina Kasih Medan Hospital.

Method: Cross sectional research design, the study is observational analytic. Samples are obtained by consecutive sampling technique. The Chi-Square test is used for data analysis.

Results: Hospitalization of 34 COVID-19 patients suffering from type 2 DM at Bina Kasih Medan Hospital showed no relationship between HbA1c levels and length of treatment because the P value results > 0.05, and also there was no relationship between D-dimer levels and length of treatment because the P value results > 0.05.

Conclusion: HbA1c and D-dimer levels are factors that are not related to the length of treatment of COVID-19 patients suffering from type 2 DM at Bina Kasih Medan Hospital.
