Abstract

To linguists and language practitioners, there is gap between Formal Grammar (rule-based study) and Functional Grammar (social context-based study) due to the distinction between the approaches implemented by the two schools of grammars. Despite the distinction, to some extent, the ideas underlying the grammars are conflated or mapped on each other. Having strengths and weaknesses, the two grammars, in collaboration, can create a better and more comprehensive approach of language for scientific and practical objectives by combining rule and context of which co-existence is inevitable in study and actual use of language, for they can strengthen each other.
